Not every rider on a national podium comes from a factory truck. In 2026 Invercargill's Jack Symon finished third in the premier MX1 class at the Yamaha New Zealand Motocross Championship as a privateer, supported by Brent Scammell Honda.

He started the series on home soil. The championship opened in Invercargill in November 2025, hosted by the Southland Motorcycle Club, and moved to Balclutha a week later. Symon was consistent all season, scoring mostly third, fourth and fifth places across the twelve races, and finished on 216 points behind champion Maximus Purvis and Josiah Natzke.

His rise has been steady. In 2024, aged 19, he finished fourth overall in MX2 on a Brent Scammell Honda CRF250R in his first senior national campaign, and won the battle for national under-19 honours on the final day in Taranaki.

"This is my first MX2 campaign in the senior nationals and I couldn't have done this without support from my sponsors, Brent and Maria Scammell," he told BikesportNZ at the time.

Two seasons later he was on the MX1 podium. He's one of the South Island's best-performing riders on the national stage, and one to watch.

He has carried that form into the 2026 Southern Series, the long-running Lower South Island championship. Wearing #3, he won all three MX1 races at both the Southland round at The Sandpit on 13 September and the Clutha round in Balclutha on 11 October, according to Speedhive timing.
